Celtics Crowned Sectional Champs

School may be out now for area prep athletes but there are still a few sporting their school colors with a potential state championship on the line. On Saturday June 4th the number one ranked baseball team in the state beat up on visiting Downers Grove South at the IHSA Class 4A Sectional championship game 12-3 in a convincing win that awarded the Celtics a trip to the Champaign Supersectional to take on Edwardsville for the right to play for an IHSA 4A state championship.

Providence pushed their season record to an amazing 35-3 behind two big innings at the plate and one heck of a day for senior Dan Potempa who went 3 for 4 at the plate including a two-run shot in the third and a two RBI double in the 5th inning sparking a five-run inning and pushing the Celtics to a ten-run 12-2 lead at that point ensuring a lock for the Sectional plaque for Providence.

“Dan had a great game for us today and his two-run shot was huge for us.” said coach Mark Smith “That was the spark that touched off a huge inning and pretty much took the wind from the Mustang sails. The wind was blowing out and we felt if we could put the bat on the ball today and put it in play we could have a big day. South is a great team and their pitching rotation is among the best we faced but it feels good anytime you live to play another game.” When asked about his thoughts on reaching the state championship and winning it he was quick to say “We aren’t looking past our next game regardless of who we play. It is so important to maintain focus at this point of the season and finish what we started. Whoever we face, it will be a tough road here on out.”

Senior ace Matt Trowbridge tossed a gem on the mound in five innings pitched and helped himself out at the plate going 3 for 4 with a double. Providence also got help in the way of two other long balls one coming from Sam Travis and Zak Kutsulis in addition to Potempa’s bomb in the 5th.

“That’s a darn good team over there and they played like the best team in the state today” said Downers South coach Darren Orel after the loss, “I am proud of the way we played and the effort this group gave me in their years at the school. This was a special group of players and ending our run together is bittersweet but they played like champions and in the end I could not be prouder of this group or their efforts all season. We will have a long road to replace this bunch but we will get back at it next week in our summer season.”

Downers South entered the Sectional as the fourth seed and beat Plainfield North to advance. The Mustangs finish their season 25-14.
