ABOUT THE AUTHOR

WACO, Tex. --- Already a historic season for the University of St. Francis football program, senior cornerback Wayne Johnson (York H.S./McConnells, SC) added to that when he was recently selected to the AFCA NAIA Coaches' All-America Team for the second year in a row.

Johnson, just the second player from St. Francis to earn the All-America status from the AFCA, became the first-ever Saint to repeat on the squad. He was one of four players on this year's squad to be recognized for the second straight year on the 25-member squad. The others were University of Saint Francis (Ind.) lineman Corey Cronk and Ottawa University (Kan.) wide receiver Clarence Anderson on offense and lineman Richard Wick out of Missouri Valley College on defense.

"Our program is very excited for Wayne to be named an All-American for the second year in a row," said USF head coach Mike Uremovich. "He is in an elite category now."

Johnson totaled 33 tackles on the season, including 23 solo stops. Two of his tackles went for loss. He also registered four pass breakups, one interception and one blocked kick, while forcing one fumble.

Johnson finished his career with 103 total tackles (79 solos) and 13 interceptions, seven of which came in his junior season when he led the Saints in that category.

A three-time all-Mid-States Football Association/Midwest League selection, Johnson was a first team pick to the squad both this year and in 2010. In 2009, he earned honorable mention recognition.

"Wayne's all-america recognition is also a reflection on our whole team and the work that everyone – all the players and coaches – put in this season to make it so special," concluded Uremovich.

USF set a school-record with its 10 wins this season, while also recording the program's first-ever NAIA Football Championship Series victory when it knocked off NAIA No. 6-ranked Morningside College (Iowa), 21-17, in the opening round.

The Saints (10-3) finished the regular season ranked No. 11 in the NAIA Coaches' Poll.
